Lincoln County is proud to sponsor its 4th Annual National Trails Day®. In addition to the June 2nd National Trails Day celebration, Lincoln County will also offer registration and an ATV Poker Run on Friday, June 1. Natioinal Trails Day is the only nationwide trails celebration, bringing together thousands of outdoor enthusiasts on the first Saturday of June. It also provides an opportunity to thank the volunteers, land managing agencies, and outdoor-minded businesses for their support in developing and maintaining trails.
Last year, on the national level, the event had a record breaking 1,210 National Trails Day events registered with American Hiking Society for national sanctioning. Events take place in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada.
National Trails Day in Lincoln County is a wonderful opportunity for people to experience the openness and beauty of the surrounding country. Please click here for 2006 photography of event or here for 2005 photos. Lincoln County is one of the few locations that offered trail events including hiking, equestrian, ATV, and a 4X4 Adventure! The two-day National Trails Day event is sponsored by the Greater Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce, Lincoln County Trails Coalition, Nevada Division of State Parks and Bureau of Land Management.
For more information on National Trails Day and how to prepare, please visit the American Hiking Society's fact sheet page. 2007 LINCOLN COUNTY NATIONAL TRAILS DAY HIGHLIGHTS
HIKING
The 2007 National Trails Day in Lincoln County hikes showcase the high country along the proposed Clover Crest Trail. The hikes are on the slopes of Sawmill Mountain which reaches an elevation of 7628 feet (highest point in the Clover Mountains). In spite of the modest elevation, Sawmill Mountain catches plenty of precipitation that supports the county's best example of a ponderosa pine forest. In addition, Sawmill Mountain is home to stands of Gambel's oak, bigtooth maple, and quaking aspen. Access to Sawmill Mountain involves about a 1 to 1.5 hour drive on dirt roads. Vehicles with good clearance can easily negotiate the access roads. A carpool will be available to take hikers to the trailhead if they don't have a truck or SUV. There are several nice areas near Sawmill Mountain to set up a primitive camp (i.e., no facilities). When you register for the hike ask for camping recommendations.
Hike 1: Quaking Aspen Spring Loop
Easy skill level 3 miles
This hike starts at Quaking Aspen Spring and is an easy grade of old skid trails that go up Quaking Aspen Canyon. After a mile, the skid trails end and a game trail continues to a saddle. From the saddle, there are good views towards Arizona and Utah. You return to Quaking Aspen Spring along the same route. This is a good hike for children under 13.
Hike 2: East Pass to Quaking Aspen Canyon
Moderate Hike 4-6 miles long
From East Pass, this trail follows the Clover Mountain ridgeline west towards Sawmill Mountain. Along the entire ridgeline are unobstructed views to the southeast and some good views to the north. At the saddle above Quaking Aspen Canyon, there is an option to climb west to the top of Sawmill Mountain (add 2 miles to the hike). The "Easy" route takes you back to Quaking Aspen Spring.
Hike 3: Clover Mountain to Sheep Spring
Strenuous Hike 10 miles long
This hike has the best unobstructed views in all directions. It starts at Quaking Aspen Spring and follows the "easy" route to the saddle. Then there is a climb to the top of Sawmill Mountain. From the summit, the hike follows the Clover Mountain ridgeline to the northwest for over 4 miles, descends into Sheep Canyon and ends at Sheep Spring.
RIDING
Condor Canyon
The equestrian ride will take place through Condor Canyon. All Trails Day events will be centered around Caliente, but equestrians can camp or stay at the rodeo grounds in Panaca.
ATV
Friday ATV Poker Run: 10:30 3:00
Saturday ATV rides will stem from the Silver State OHV Trail. An ATV Poker Run will be on June 1st, with the main rides on June 2nd.
Ride 1: Cobalt Mine Ride
Beginner skill level - 50+ mile loop
From Caliente, the trail heads up Antelope Canyon over to Cobalt Mining Area, swings over to Hanging Tree and back to Caliente by way of Clover Creek.
Ride 2: Saw Mill Canyon Ride
Intermediate+ skill level - 45+ mile loop- 4 wheel drive required
no side by sides
"From Caliente participants head for Saw Mill Canyon cutoff. Once in the canyon, much of the road is gone from floods (rocks and traversing). Out of the canyon you head for Mt. Ella to the fire look-out tower. Going down the mountain is a 2-track with some tricky spots. From there, the trail goes by Teepee Rocks and back to Caliente by way of Clover Creek (water park fun).
Ride 3: Silver State Trail Ride
Intermediate skill level - 60 mile loop
This trail ride will leave from Caliente and follow the Silver State Trail. Expect some beautiful scenery, in and out of the junipers and pines.
Ride 4: Hackett Ranch Ride
Intermediate skill level - 50+ mile loops
This Ride requires trailering the ATVs to the trail head (approximately 40 minutes). They will then be ridden to the Hackett Ranch for a tour that includes visiting the family cemetery. Then its north to Ox Valley and on to Rigoli Cabin. The trail swings back by the ranch, then up and over the ridge to a large mining area for a visit to the Fay Mine and Fay Cemetery. Then you will head back to the trail head.
Ride 5: East Pass Ride - 70+ mile loop - Sport Machines
Intermediate skill level
This will be a faster paced ride, with spare fuel at the halfway point From Caliente, this ride will vary in terrain with graded roads, two track, and some rocky areas of washed out road. Places of interest include Mt. Ella lookout. You will go to Fife Flat, then Pine Canyon Dam and on to Quaking Aspen Spring for a lunch break. Then its on to the top of East Pass, up a 2 track and to Mathews Reservoir and into Barnes Canyon past Teepee Rocks, and finish along Clover Creek to Caliente.
4X4 / JEEP
A 4X4 vehicle like a Jeep is definitely necessary, but any high clearance 4X4 vehicle can take part in this event. It will depart from Caliente and go along the west side of the Chief Mountain Range and stop for a break. It will also be a chance to look for Trilobite fossils. The ride will then continue along the west side of the Highland Range, return to State Route 321 and drive back to Caliente on Highway 93. This is an an all-day event, and participants will return to Caliente by 4 p.m.
